Detroit, MI – October, 2016 The Empowerment Plan, Impact100 Metro Detroit’s 2016 grant award winner, hosted members and friends in October for a private tour of their workspace, and an inside look at how they are using their $50,000 grant. Members and guests who attended the 2016 award luncheon back in May might remember that the Empowerment Plan makes warm coats for the homeless that transform into sleeping bags. In addition to this, however, they are using the grant money to further their efforts to fight homelessness itself, not just put a bandage on the problem (albeit a warm one). Over the past several years, the organization has been hiring homeless women, teaching them to piece and sew the garments, and offering them life-skill classes which will enable them to get themselves and their children off the street, thus breaking the cycle of poverty. They have already had several successful “graduates” of the program who have gone on to get other jobs using the skills they learned. Congratulations to this wonderful organization for their work to help those who rarely have a voice in society. Enjoy the photos below of the workspace, the product, and the hard-working women involved at all levels, from Empowerment Plan founder Veronika Scott to those who sew each garment with love.
