About 25 Impact100 members and friends took a tour of the Downtown Boxing Gym on June 12 to see the facility, meet the kids, and deliver the first portion of their $100,000 grant. All of us were moved and impressed by the kids, the staff, the volunteers and the programming. A few facts: the gym serves 125 kids of all ages, and hopes to double that number in the next two and a half years; their wait list is in excess of 800 at this time; children are chosen by lottery and they and their families sign contracts promising that they attend 5 days per week and it’s always “books before boxing”; they teach classes in all subjects (literacy, math, science, technology, culinary skills, and much more); they feed the children daily in conjunction with Forgotten Harvest and other groups; they discovered several kids with some great musical talent after someone donated a piano, and now they have a full music studio on site; they expect all kids to work together and be respectful of one another at all times; report cards and achievements are celebrated daily; and above all, the program works! Thanks to Khali Sweeney and the whole staff for hosting us and sharing your time. We are proud to be working with you.
