2020 Grant Awardee Micah 6 Community Opens New Greenhouse

In 2020, Impact100 Metro Detroit members voted to award a $100,000 grant to the Micah 6 Community in Pontiac.  At the time, the small organization owned one vacant lot and a couple of small houses in Pontiac, but their vision was HUGE.  They wanted to bring their small Pontiac neighborhood together, and to ensure that all residents had access to fresh food.  They turned that first vacant lot into a small urban farm, and since then, they haven’t looked back.  They now own and farm over an acre of land, and have chickens and bees, too.

In May of 2020, with the pandemic raging and the need growing each day, their vision of what urban farming could bring to the neighborhood got a boost with an I100 MD grant.  Their new greenhouse, built with our support, celebrated its grand opening this summer.  The facility will extend the growing season to a full year, making affordable fresh produce available to residents via the Micah 6 market, Sprout, within walking distance.  Currently, the closest grocery store is 15 miles away in Waterford, and is not accessible by public transit.

Impact100 Metro Detroit is proud to be a part of Micah 6’s growth over the past three years.  They are a vibrant nonprofit dedicated to making their corner of the world a better place.
